What this is, and why it matters
Volume calibration establishes what an instrument actually delivers or contains, against what it claims. Piston pipettes, burettes, volumetric flasks and cylinders are usually calibrated gravimetrically — the delivered volume is weighed and converted using the density of water at the measured temperature — at several points across the range, with repeatability established at each. Flow meters and dispensing systems are calibrated against reference meters, or by collection over a measured time.
Pipettes are the most under-maintained instruments in most laboratories and among the most consequential. A pipette delivering two per cent low silently biases every dilution, every standard and every result built on top of them, and nothing in the result itself reveals it — the numbers stay plausible all the way through. In dispensing and filling the same error becomes a fill-volume and declared-content exposure. Both cases are invisible without calibration, which is exactly why the interval matters more here than in disciplines where a fault announces itself.

When you need it
A pipette feeds a laboratory result
Dilutions, standards and reagent preparation all rest on delivered volume. A biased pipette biases the entire method, and the result still looks completely normal on the page.
You declare a volume on a pack
Filling and dispensing systems make a declaration on every single unit. Verifying delivered volume is how that declaration is supported when someone measures it themselves.
A method or a scheme specifies it
ISO 17025 laboratories and accredited method work require volumetric equipment to be calibrated and traceable at stated intervals, and it is checked.

How it works
Identify the instrument and the range you use
Instrument type, nominal volume or flow range, and the volumes you actually set it to. A variable pipette is calibrated at the settings you use — normally minimum, mid and maximum — rather than only at its nominal volume.
Coverage confirmed against the accredited scope
The laboratory confirms whether your instrument and range sit inside the accredited scope before quoting. Where they do not, that is said plainly rather than quietly absorbed — the scope annex is published on this site precisely so the boundary is checkable.
Measured as found, before any adjustment
The as-found reading is recorded first, always. It is the only evidence of whether the measurements you have already taken and acted on were sound, and adjusting the instrument before measuring it destroys that evidence permanently.
Certificate issued against traceable references
The certificate states the mean delivered volume at each point tested, the systematic and random error, the uncertainty, and the reference balance or meter used with its traceability.

Common questions
Volume and flow
We check our pipettes in-house with a balance — is that a calibration?
It is a check, and a useful one, but a calibration adds what a check cannot: traceable references and a stated uncertainty for each point. The check tells you the pipette has not failed; the calibration makes its volumes defensible when the results built on them are questioned.
Does it matter what liquid I dispense in service?
It can — calibration establishes performance under the conditions stated on the certificate. If your working liquid behaves very differently from those conditions, tell the laboratory before the work, so the approach and its limits are agreed in writing rather than discovered later.
Why does as-found matter on a pipette?
Because the as-found result judges every volume dispensed since the last calibration. A certificate showing only the adjusted state has deleted that evidence — which is exactly the number an investigation into old results will ask for.
Can a flow meter be calibrated in place?
Whether the work happens in place or at the laboratory depends on the instrument and the installation, and the arrangement is confirmed in writing. What does not change is the substance: comparison against a traceable reference, with uncertainty stated and the conditions recorded on the certificate.
What uncertainty will my certificate show?
It is stated per calibration point, not as one blanket figure, and it depends on the instrument and the range. The number to hold it against is the tolerance your own method needs — the laboratory does not know that tolerance unless you state it, so include it with the request.
