What this is, and why it matters
Dimensional calibration establishes how far a measuring instrument is from true, at points across its working range. A caliper, micrometer, dial indicator, height gauge, gauge block, tape or test rule is measured against reference standards of known value, and the deviation at each point is recorded together with the uncertainty of the measurement.
Calibration is not repair, and it is not a pass stamp. It is a statement of error with an uncertainty attached, which is what lets you decide whether an instrument is fit for what you personally use it for. The same caliper reading three hundredths high is perfectly serviceable for a packaging check and useless for a machined tolerance. The certificate gives you the number; the decision stays yours, which is the part a sticker on the handle cannot do.

When you need it
Your quality system requires it
ISO 9001, ISO 22000, FSSC 22000 and the manufacturing schemes all require that measuring equipment used for conformity decisions is calibrated at defined intervals and traceable to national standards. It remains one of the most commonly raised audit findings in this market.
An instrument was dropped, repaired or moved
Interval-based calibration quietly assumes nothing happened between intervals. A knock, a repair, or a move into a different environment invalidates that assumption, and the interval does not know it.
A measurement is in dispute
When a customer rejects on dimension, the argument is settled by whose instrument is traceable. An as-found certificate dated before the dispute is the strongest position available to you, and it cannot be created afterwards.

How it works
Identify the instrument and the range you use
Instrument type, make, model, serial number, and the range and resolution you actually work at. The points measured are chosen to cover your working range rather than the instrument’s full span, because error at a range you never use tells you nothing useful.
Coverage confirmed against the accredited scope
The laboratory confirms whether your instrument and range sit inside the accredited scope before quoting. Where they do not, that is said plainly rather than quietly absorbed — the scope annex is published on this site precisely so the boundary is checkable.
Measured as found, before any adjustment
The as-found reading is recorded first, always. It is the only evidence of whether the measurements you have already taken and acted on were sound, and adjusting the instrument before measuring it destroys that evidence permanently.
Certificate issued against traceable references
The certificate states the measured deviation at each point, the uncertainty at each point, the reference standards used and their traceability, and the condition the instrument was received in.
What you get back
A calibration certificate identifying the instrument, listing each measurement point with its deviation and uncertainty, and naming the reference standards behind it — one document, one traceability line, no interpretation required.

Common questions
Dimensional
Is your dimensional calibration accredited?
No — dimensional work is carried out in-house against traceable references and is not within the accredited scope. The certificate states this plainly, so whether it satisfies a given requirement in your quality system is a decision you can make on paper, before an audit rather than during one.
Does non-accredited mean non-traceable?
No. The references used are themselves calibrated with traceability, and the certificate names them. Non-accredited means the work has not been assessed by SAAC under ISO/IEC 17025:2017 — it does not mean the chain of measurement is broken.
My caliper passed last year but reads wrong now — how?
A calibration is a snapshot, not a warranty. Drift, wear and the occasional drop all happen between calibrations, which is why the as-found result at each calibration matters — it tells you what the instrument was actually doing across the interval.
Who sets the calibration interval?
You do. The laboratory does not impose one, because the right interval depends on how hard the instrument is used and what its as-found history shows. Instruments that keep arriving in tolerance can justify longer intervals; ones that do not, cannot.
Do you adjust the instrument or just report it?
Where adjustment is possible, the certificate shows both as-found and as-left, so the record of what the instrument was reading before adjustment is never lost. Where adjustment is not possible, the result tells you whether to keep, restrict or retire the instrument.
