WHAT THIS IS
What this is, and why it matters
Electrical calibration compares an instrument against reference standards at defined points of voltage, current and resistance, and reports the deviation and uncertainty at each. It covers multimeters and clamp meters, insulation and continuity testers, and process calibrators — the instruments your technicians use to check other instruments, which makes their own accuracy the foundation under everything checked with them.
Two uses drive the work. The first is maintenance and safety testing, where an insulation tester giving a wrong reading either condemns healthy equipment or, considerably worse, passes a real fault. The second is process instrumentation: a technician using a process calibrator to set a 4–20 mA loop transfers their calibrator’s error into every instrument they touch that day. Calibrating the reference kit first is the cheapest correction available anywhere in a maintenance department.

Your technicians calibrate other instruments
A process calibrator or reference meter used to set field instruments propagates its own error into every one of them. It belongs on a shorter interval than the instruments it services, not the same one.
Electrical safety testing is documented
Insulation resistance and continuity results recorded against equipment are only meaningful if the tester that produced them is itself traceable.
The measurement ends up in a record you keep
Any electrical measurement that lands in a maintenance record, a validation report or a safety file needs an instrument behind it that can be evidenced later.

How it works
Identify the instrument and the range you use
Instrument type, make, model, and the functions and ranges you actually use. A multimeter used only for voltage and continuity does not need its every function calibrated, and saying so keeps the certificate honest and the cost proportionate.
Coverage confirmed against the accredited scope
The laboratory confirms whether your instrument and range sit inside the accredited scope before quoting. Where they do not, that is said plainly rather than quietly absorbed — the scope annex is published on this site precisely so the boundary is checkable.
Measured as found, before any adjustment
The as-found reading is recorded first, always. It is the only evidence of whether the measurements you have already taken and acted on were sound, and adjusting the instrument before measuring it destroys that evidence permanently.
Certificate issued against traceable references
The certificate states each function and range tested, the measured deviation and uncertainty at each point, and the reference standards used with their traceability.

Common questions
Electrical
Is electrical calibration within your accredited scope?
No — electrical work is carried out in-house against traceable references and is not within the accredited scope. The certificate says so plainly, so the status of the work is settled on paper before your auditor ever asks.
Is a non-accredited certificate acceptable for my ISO system?
That depends on what your quality system requires for each instrument, and the judgement belongs to you and your auditor — not to us. Many systems distinguish instruments that need accredited calibration from those where traceable calibration is sufficient. What the certificate guarantees is that its status is explicit, so the question never arrives as a surprise finding.
Do you calibrate the multimeter or each function separately?
Each function and range you use gets its own points and its own uncertainty — a meter accurate on DC voltage says nothing about its current ranges. Tell the laboratory which functions your work depends on, and the coverage is confirmed in writing.
The meter is within the manufacturer’s specification — why calibrate?
The specification is a design claim about meters of that model; calibration is evidence about your meter, today, with data. Instruments drift individually, and the manufacturer’s brochure will not defend a measurement in front of an auditor.
A function came back out of tolerance — now what?
It is reported exactly as found, and that result judges the measurements that function made since the last calibration. You decide what to review, and whether the meter is adjusted, restricted to the functions still in tolerance, or retired.
